Role Overview / Mission

This role exists to lead a team that manages data collection and curation for the AI team, with a focus on automated data collection and labeling using advanced AI and Large Language Models (LLMs). As an AI Data Engineering Manager, you will join a global team focused on delivering sophisticated AI and data systems, pioneering the next generation of data and AI pipelines to expand the team’s impact. You will also collaborate internally to integrate AI and data science across a range of products designed to enhance learning, teaching, and academic integrity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and develop a team of AI data engineers, supporting their professional growth and ensuring high performance.
  • Guide senior leadership on how to use AI-driven data engineering for future data and AI strategies.
  • Communicate the company’s vision and mission clearly within the team and foster effective internal communication.
  • Design, build, manage, and deploy large-scale real-time data pipelines using AI methods and best practices.
  • Apply advanced data warehousing, data science, and data engineering technologies to speed up AI research and development efforts.
  • Identify strategic opportunities, such as using LLM agents, to bring new AI initiatives to market faster and increase their reusability.
  • Work with other teams, specifically AI R&D, Applied AI, and Data Platform teams, to collect, create, organize, and catalog high-quality AI datasets that support AI development and answer business questions.
  • Ensure data architecture and models are consistent across different products and platforms.
  • Perform data engineering and data science tasks as needed to support the team.
  • Lead external data collection efforts, including advanced prompt engineering, to build AI models.
  • Drive data innovation through research and development to find insights from the company’s data resources.
  • Stay up-to-date with new tools and development strategies in the technical field and recommend innovations to leadership.

Required Qualifications / Skills

  • At least 5 years of experience in data engineering and data science, with a focus on enabling and accelerating AI research and development.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a managerial or technical leadership role, with responsibility for large cross-functional projects.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, SQL, and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation).
  • Experience with modern orchestration frameworks (Airflow, Prefect, or dbt).
  • Proficiency with cloud-native data platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and vector databases (Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, or Chroma).
  • Experience with MLOps tools and platforms (HuggingFace, SageMaker Bedrock, Vertex AI), experiment tracking (MLflow, Weights & Biases), and model deployment pipelines.
  • Experience with Large Language Models (LLMs), embedding generation, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems, and frameworks for orchestrating LLM interaction (LiteLLM, LangFuse, LangChain, LlamaIndex).
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to design scalable AI data systems and collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills

  • 7+ years of experience in data engineering and data science, with a focus on AI and machine learning projects.
  • 2+ years of experience in a managerial or technical leadership role.
  • Experience in education, EdTech, or academic integrity sectors.
  • Experience using AI coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) for accelerated development.
  • Familiarity with natural language processing, computer vision, or multimodal AI applications.
  • Experience with data visualization (Streamlit) and data reporting.
